Method and sources

The federal return uses the 2026 tables: up to 85% of Social Security taxed under the IRS worksheet, the standard deduction with the extra amount at 65 and the 2026 senior deduction, ordinary brackets, then qualified dividends and long-term gains stacked on top at 0%, 15% or 20%, and the 3.8% net investment income tax above its threshold. Itemized deductions are not asked; the standard deduction is used.

State tax comes from the state’s latest published tables and its rules for Social Security, pensions and IRA withdrawals; a state still on an earlier year’s figures says so under the result. Withdrawals are treated as IRA withdrawals. A married couple’s Social Security, pensions and withdrawals are split evenly between you, which matters in states with a per-person retirement exclusion. Indiana and Maryland county taxes are included; other local income taxes are not. IRMAA uses the latest published tiers as an estimate for premiums two years out.
